Stewie 810: Harold Reynolds
camquarters: John Kruk
NYsports101: Karl Ravech
Baseball Tonight - August 14th, 2005
Stewie810: Hello everyone, I'm Harold Reynolds. Along side me is Karl Ravech and Jon Kruk for tonights episode of Baseball Tonight, the first of the season.
Stewie810: Today was quite a busy day in the world of transactions, wouldn't you say?
camquarters: yes
NYsports101: I think i would agree with that
Stewie810: What would you guys say was the biggest move in today's transactions?
NYsports101: Harold, i think I'm gonna have to go with the Tracy, Gonzo for Floyd, Daubach deal.
NYsports101: Many trades have occured, and if you ask me the biggest ones occured yesterday
Stewie810: I agree Karl, on both accounts. Tracy and Gonzo for Floyd and Daubach..who do you think got the better end of that one?
camquarters: I think the mets. The mets get a good young first baseman and a good leftfielder.
NYsports101: If you ask me, I'd go with the D'backs who got a slightly better outfielder in Floyd and a solid first baseman in Tracy
NYsports101: I mean the Mets Harold... excuse me because it IS the first day
camquarters: Ahh, Karl, Gonzo and Tracy went to the Mets.
Stewie810: Was just gonna say that Jon.
camquarters: I need to have a donut
NYsports101: Well, after the segment I'll take you someplace to eat Jon... I invite.
Stewie810: Only time will tell who got the better end of this one, but Gonzo as a Met...
NYsports101: We'll see about that soon.
Stewie810: Ok well, with that Karl and Jon, we'll have to continue after a short commercial break. Do I get to come along too?
(commercial break)
Stewie810: Welcome back to Baseball tonight, I'm Harold Reynolds with Karl Ravech and Jon Kruk.
Stewie810: Our next discussion is the Atlanta Braves and Oakland Athletics trade. Guys, how do you feel about that trade?
camquarters: I feel like the A's got the better deal personally.
NYsports101: I really did not see a reason why the Braves traded Furcal.
NYsports101: He clearly is the best player in this trade and they also gave away outfielder Ryan Langerhans who they were pretty high on.
camquarters: Oakland got a better shortstop and a ultity man and it ended up to be a good trade for Billy Beane and Oakland.
Stewie810: Well guys, I gotta step in for the Braves here. Yeah the Braves did ship Furcal and Langerhans and Orr, and ok, they got downgraded at SS, they added Jay Payton, who I still feel has a lot left in him.
NYsports101: I don't know Harold, the A's really did get better withi this trade in my opinion and this is just another example of Billy Beane and his masterful GM skills
camquarters: You mean the cheap ball?
NYsports101: you mean MONEYBALL!
NYsports101: Which, I might add, has worked for them
camquarters: Ok, whatever you say Karl.
NYsports101: Anything else left to say about this deal Harold?
Stewie810: Yeah Karl, I would have to say that the A's may have gotten the better end of this, but hey, only time will tell, and that's what's great about this game.
camquarters: Has money ball won any championships?....... HECK NO!
NYsports101: Now Krucky, don't get impatient, I WILL take you someplace to eat after the show.
Stewie810: Haha, can we please get him some food out here?
Stewie810: Lets take a look at another trade then, what about the Twins and Rangers deal?
camquarters: The Twins got younger and the Rangers got more expensive, it's as simple as that.
NYsports101: For those of you that don't know it... here it is... Nathan/Lecroy for Cordero/Laird
Stewie810: I personally don't see what was in it for the Twins. They give up Nathan and LeCroy, for yes, a good reliever in Cordero...but what about Gerald Laird?
camquarters: He's a great prospect...
NYsports101: Yes, i agree..I think the Rangers got a slightly better deal because they got Lecroy who can play DH.
Stewie810: I guess you just have to weigh out how much better Cordero is, but still, I'm saying the Rangers pulled a fast one.
NYsports101: The two closers are very good, but Lecroy is a slightly better player than Laird.
camquarters: LeCroy will decline, you hear me, decline.
NYsports101: Lecroy does remind me of Kruky *laughs it off*
Stewie810: Haha, well moving on guys.and I'm sure this will be an interesting one, but what about my boys, the Mariners, trading Beltre to Anahiem?
camquarters: Angels got scamed beacuse Beltre's salary is over 10 million.
Stewie810: And the deal, for those who don't know, was Adrian Beltre, Willie Bloomquist and Miguel Ojeda for Chone Figgins, Jose Molina, and prospects Jeff Mathis and Dalls McPherson.
NYsports101: The Beltre deal... i have some things to say about it
Stewie810: Can I Karl, before you get in on this one?
NYsports101: Go ahead, you are the former MARINER
camquarters: Former, is the key word.
Stewie810: Aaha, and don't you forget it my man!
Stewie810: Here it is...the Mariners lost a key guy in Beltre, and for what, a couple of prospects in McPherson and Mathis? I know they improved in a couple of ways, but losing a centerpiece like Beltre...ya just have to wonder where they went.
NYsports101: I might be a little biased here, but I feel the Mariners got the better end of this trade. Beltre clearly is not the player he was last year and the Mariners wanted to erase the mistake they made of signing him.
NYsports101: Therefore, since they have many wholes on their team, they filled two of them... 2b/ss and 3b in Figgins and McPherson, respectively.
Stewie810: Do you think McPherson can handle the load..I personally see him as 2 years away from the show.
camquarters: I see 1.
NYsports101: They also swapped catchers and acquired Molina (Jose) because of his glove and they feel he will get to prove himself after spending years backing up older brother Bengie.
Stewie810: And division rivals...man there are gonna be some heated games this year!
NYsports101: And finally, Jeff Mathis, a talented young prospect, was also acquired by the Mariners giving them their catcher for the future
NYsports101: So, in reality the Mariners filled four needs by giving up 2
NYsports101: Finito, i am finished ranting on about this trade.
Stewie810: Phew! Lets move on guys, shall we?
camquarters: Yep Harold
Stewie810: Allright, Braves and Rangers...who is the winner here?
camquarters: Braves. They got Soriano while the Rangers got, well, nothing.
NYsports101: Braves. They get rid of Brian Jordan (the failed experiment) and acquire a solid 2B in Soriano who will hit the heck outta the ball in Atlanta.
camquarters: I agree, Totally.
NYsports101: They do give up a prospect in and Davies, and maybe even Kelly Johnson... but they had to to get the proven stud.
Stewie810: Well guys, there was a lot of fuss regarding this deal. First, Soriano was gonna be an Angel...then, the Rangers GM started talking with Oakland, and outta no where, the Braves win the sweepstakes
NYsports101: Thats baseball, right Jon?
NYsports101: Remember Vlad a couple of years back...
camquarters: Heck no! You mean the fixed lottery?
Stewie810: I also think the Braves pulled Arias outta this deal, who the Braves are banking on being ready in a few years to fill in for the Furcal-hole..
camquarters: I just think the Rangers are playing money ball like Beane.
Stewie810: Well, lets take a break, shall we guys?
NYsports101: I think we should -- Kruk here is getting a little restless.
camquarters: I need food!
NYsports101: Rangers... Moneyball!!
Stewie810: You heard it here...Jon needs food, the Rangers playing Moneyball...we'll be back in a few!
(commerical break)
Stewie810: Welcome back to Baseball Tonight, it is now time for Fact or Fiction. John Kruk won't be able to join us for tonight's round of Fact or Fiction.
NYsports101: Too bad, it was Kruk's favorite part!
Stewie810: Fact of Fiction : Luis Gonzalez will have a big role in the Mets organization.
NYsports101: Fiction, Gonzo is getting older and older and already had his big moment in the World Series run w/ the D'backs
NYsports101: His shoulder is hurting real bad and he would be better suited as a DH instead
NYsports101: What do you think Harold?
Stewie810: Fiction, Gonzo will still put up some big numbers, but Shea won't be as friendly to him as Bank One was a couple of years back.
Stewie810: Speaking of trading...
Stewie810: Fact of Fiction: Alfonso Soriano will be traded again this offseason
NYsports101: Fact, the Braves will move Giles back to 2B after this season and make room for top prospect Andy Marte at the hot corner. This whole experiment is going to be good for this year but then
NYsports101: either Marte will get traded next year or Soriano will get dealt because Marte is too good to play yet another year in the minors
Stewie810: Fact, the Braves have already had a lot of calls from several teams, and I think John will pull the gun on another OF to move Giles back to 2nd and bring Chipper back in to 3rd...leading up to Marte making his big debut.
Stewie810: Allright, the Orioles will make a World Series appearance this season.
Stewie810: Fact or Fiction
NYsports101: Fiction, no doubt about it!! The Orioles play in a division w/ the Yanks and Sox (w/ boston accent) and probably wont even make the 'loffs (like I like to call them)
NYsports101: They're pitching will falter but they're hitting will keep them in contention
Stewie810: Fact, the Orioles adding Hampton and Clement gives their hitting the ability to win some close games, and with the Red Sox and Yankees considerably over the CAP , Baltimore is the place to be if you want some bling.
Stewie810: Well, that's all for fact or fiction..now it's time for, well, you know what time it is...it's the Most Important Thing!
NYsports101: Harold, I'll close it off by saying that the Braves GM, John Schuerholz is really making an effort for the team to get over the hump this year and win. They make the 'loffs EVERY year but don't get anything accomplished there.
NYsports101: This year, he has been very active and has already made 3 deals and wants to make more. I believe he is very commited to winning and is letting everyone know that.
Stewie810: Karl, I'm gonna stay with the GM talk, this time about John Hart, the GM of the Texas Rangers. There is a thing called integrity in this game, and pulling out of two deals with Soriano really isn't the way to go if you want to build
Stewie810: connections for future trade agreements. I know he was simply shopping for the best offer, but really, there has to be a better way than verbally consenting to trade and then pulling out.
NYsports101: That will be it for this episode. Next time we'll cover the salary cap and the latest new in baseball.
NYsports101: And for that, we say so long from BASEBALL TONIGHT. I'm Karl Ravech, this is Harold Reynolds *points at him*, this is the belove John Kruk *points at him*, and I'm Karl Ravech *points at self*
NYsports101: Stay tuned for the next episode of BASEBALL TONIGHT (in Karl Ravech's cool voice)!
Stewie810: Peace!
camquarters: John Kruk
NYsports101: Karl Ravech
